Somewhere between beginning law school and completing law school, I developed an appreciation for bourbon. I’m not sure if it is because everyone suddenly thought that a nice bottle of bourbon was the perfect gift or because during my travels I visited several distilleries, but however it happened, I am grateful that it did. Now, in addition to enjoying a nice glass of bourbon with a slowly melting compressed ice ball, I also enjoy bourbon cocktails and my Rosemary Bourbon Blast is one of my favorites. Let’s get shaking.

Ingredients
- 2 sprigs of rosemary (1 dried, 1 fresh)
- 2 ounces of bourbon whiskey
- 1 ounce of fresh Meyer Lemon juice (reserve lemon rind)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons of simply syrup
- 2-3 shakes of aromatic bitters
Instructions
- Gently hit the fresh rosemary with the back of the knife to release the rosemary. Light the rosemary on fire, quickly extinguish the flame, put the rosemary in your serving glass, and turn the glass upside down on a flat surface to trap the smoke.
- In a cocktail shaker, combine the bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup and shake.
- Turn over the serving glass, discard the charred rosemary, add in a compressed ice ball (if you do not have one, fill with ice cubes). Pour the cocktail into the serving glass, shake in the bitters, and give it a stir.
- Using a knife or vegetable peeler, peel a 2-3 inch strip of lemon rind, rub the ring around the rim of the glass, twirl the rind into a spiral and place into into the cocktail glass. Garnish with the fresh sprig of rosemary and enjoy.
